Proteas: Roots and Resilience

Proteas: Roots and Resilience

The protea, named after the Greek god Proteus who could change forms, is a symbol of resilience, diversity, and transformation - qualities mirrored in South Africa’s landscapes and history.

For me, the protea represents my roots in South Africa and the strength found in adapting to change. Finding a sense of belonging is key to wellbeing, and acknowledging our roots and heritage can be a healing process in and of itself.

There’s something profoundly grounding about discovering that proteas have existed for millions of years. They've endured shifting landscapes, climate changes, and wildfires - yet they’ve survived and thrived. In a fast-changing world where it’s easy to feel disconnected or uprooted, there’s comfort in knowing that something ancient and enduring is part of your story too. When we explore our origins, we realize we’re part of a much bigger, timeless narrative. Proteas remind us that we belong to something older than borders, cultures, or circumstances. We’re connected through time, to the land and to each other - strong, resilient, and capable of blooming wherever life plants us.

Many proteas actually require the fire to germinate, testament to the power of resilience and renewal.a reminder not only of life’s ability to flourish even in the most hectic circumstances, but that very ordeal is what makes it possible for them to grow.

My work on a collection of proteas explores resilience, connection and belonging.

I hope that reflecting on on the symbolism of the protea will be a source of comfort and inspiration to those who look upon her.
